Happy 60th birthday dad! // at 23:59

Interesting suggestion popped up during discussion on my destruction of my laptop. Since we haven't got ACAP working for everything™, fiddle it with an IMAP folder holding all my config files as MIME attachments or such.

Phew! I think I've mostly recovered from destroying my laptop. "Upgrading" from Windows2000 to WindowsXP failed, destroying the partition table (who knows how) and of course I hadn't got backups of some of my most recent photos, so the following I only have thumbnails and medium size images left.

I've been attempting to get my old webcam working under WindowsXP on the laptop, the installer keeps crashing due to some parts of an old version of the software. I've written to the tech support from LifeView, but judging by the poor instructions that arrived with the original software, I don't expect a response.

Following on from yesterday, Mozilla's SVG+MathML build is now working again with our proxy service.

So here are two test pages for me:

Or maybe even an embedded sample:

Mozilla seems to have recovered from its mishap of Monday and yesterday. The daily build is back to working with the authenticating proxy. Letting this be a lesson to me, I've now got three builds on my machine! Last stable release (0.9.9), the current daily, and the current SVG+MathML build (which lags the daily a bit, but is of more interest to me.

Book shops, book shops... I ended up ordering dad's present direct from the press, under one week delivery rather than the rather vague “we'll order it and it should be here in a fortnight or two...”

Two maniacs/motorists that just have to be mentioned:

  • A blue/green Toyota Seca, rego. Vic. FSA-723. Why was he weaving around at 85km/hr in the right-hand lane of the freeway where the speed limit is 100km/hr? He had a bowl of cereal in his lap and was eating it with a spoon! Scary thing is that he might be the one I saw a few weeks ago eating cereal in his car.
  • Blue WRX, decided that me on the motorbike doing 50 in a 50 zone wasn't good enough, blast on the horn, overtakes up the bicycle lane, then swerves out toward me as part of turning left up the next side street.

Since I've been playing with Mozilla, I guess its time to try some of those newer features that it supports. MathML would be a good start... E = m c 2

Ouch! Looks like I broke that one. More testing needed before I can successfully mix PHP and XML and not crash browsers or the PHP interpreter!

A little update to my photos URL rewriting and I should finally have the php index displaying working correctly. At least it seems to be for the folders of pictures from the digital camera. More work seems to be needed for the APS folders.

Temper temper… // at 23:59

I just had to laugh. Cycling up Beach Road on a Sunday afternoon, literally hundreds of cyclists about, traffic is at a crawl due to the enormous number of events that are on. Red Falcon (Vic. NZY-740) drives past in the right hand lane and the passenger sticks her head out the window, screaming her lungs out “Get off the F@#$ing road, get on the F@#$ing footpath.” If she yells that much at each cyclist between Mordialloc and St Kilda, she'll be hoarse for a week!

Very strange. Riding home last night along the freeway, I passed a jogger running along in the breakdown lane. 10:30 at night, black shorts, black singlet and reflective shoes, halfway between the Boulevarde and Toorak Road.

And I've taken one more step towards an XML based website. I've rewritten the about page as XHTML, and fixed up my stylesheets to include my logo so I don't need to include it on a page-by-page basis.

Cold-calling phone salespeople - they've never been high on the list of people I like, today they just managed to move themselves a little higher up the list.

For about the fifth time in under a month, some idiot has called while we're either cooking or eating dinner and asked us if we'd like to subscribe to the Herald Sun. I told them quite bluntly that I would never like to subscribe and as this was the fifth call, would they stop harrassing us!

Driving... Driving, driving, driving... It's such a long way from Bungendore to Melbourne. Pleasant change to be doing it during the day, just driving down the Hume, blue sky, dry grass, seven hours of blazing sun. Just outside Seymour we drove into a huge thunderstorm, the temperature dropped from 32 to 16.5 in under ten minutes.

Where?

Trialling BlogX on my Palm Pilot // at 23:59

9:02 am

Maybe I should use this log in addition to my existing one?

9:08 am

Sitting in the train, after picking up my bike key in the city — $15 - it works iu ths seat lofk - I wonder about the ignition?

Only five cars parked in the Bridge Rd. clearway gn the way in, and another ten or so driving in the bike lane - relatively good I guess.

Or I could translate all that and run it through the cleaner-upper. The bits above were scrawled out on a Palm Pilot while in the train:

XEmacs tries me // at 23:59

This is really starting to annoy me! XEmacs on wyvern has been periodically entering a state where it just sits there, beeps, and prints an error message and won't do anymore until I exit it. "Invalid back reference" — what the @#@#$!@#%%%^@ does that mean?

Autumn? // at 23:59

So this is Autumn? So much for summer. Coolest summer for six years in Melbourne, and since I've been in Melbourne since June 1996, I guess that makes it the coolest summer I've had. Sure didn't seem like summer. Mostly grey, mostly cool, frequently wet.

And just sometimes I laugh at the viruses/worms/whatevers that I see in the warnings. I need to have something to keep me sane while I watch the thousands around me blindly "click here to see pictures of me nude".

Dog Day // at 23:59

08:45, somewhere around Glenn Iris a large labrador is busy relieving itself on the edge of the path. As I ride past the owner, strolling along six metres back, lead dangling from her hand, I say to the owner “Hope you're going to clean that up. Receive typical reply, “mind your own business. Apparently large smelly piles of dog faeces on a shared path is not my business. No, she did not clean it up either.

19:00, Glen Iris park, woman in her 20s is leading a small terrier on a lead, and walking along the left hand side of the track. As I come up behind her she glances over her shoulder and then walks diagonally across the path straight in front of me to get off the right hand side! Wishing to not run into her I stopped, did a track stand, and rode around her to the left. The following conversation the took place.

  Me: “Please keep left!”
  Her: “Piss off”
Me: “You do know you're supposed to keep to the left?”
Her: “Piss off, I was getting out of your way”
Me: “No, you didn't, you nearly walked into me! You're meant to

walk on the left!”

  Her: “Just piss off dickhead”
Me: “I hope you drive on the left”
  Her: “Get fucked”

19:15, a bit further along where the path narrows and there's a wall on the left and a fence on the right. From the left there is: a dog on a lead, a girl holding the lead, another girl waving a lead about, then about four metres in front, another loose dog. I slowed to a walking pace and said “Evening, can I get through?” Number two girl steps in behind number one, I fit past, then she screams out the dog's name three times as the loose dog comes bounding straight at my wheel. Again, I stop and just stand there, then ride around the dog. Another intelligent conversation with a dog owner:

Me: “I guess that's what the lead's supposed to be for.”
  Her: “Get stuffed”
  Me: “Gee, thanks”
Her: “...and next time slow down!”
Me: “Lady, I STOPPED, which is why I didn't hit YOUR dog.”
