This is being typed from memory in my spare time and I haven’t finished writing it so….
Jo was feeling very tired so we rode at an easy pace out of Sorrento and around the bay towards Rosebud, the weather couldn’t make up its mind whether it was cool or hot so we were stopping every fifteen minutes or so to change into or back out of our jackets.
At 1:30 we arrived at Frankston Station, just in time for Jo to get on the 1:40 train to the city, I left at the same time and decided to race the train around the bay, by the time I reached Mordialloc I was still ahead, averaging 35km/hr and half scared to death by the number of idiots opening car doors, changing lanes, driving out of parking spaces and generally being motorists. Every TAB was surrounded by an enormous crowd as people tried to place their last minute bets on the cup.
Riding up Beach Rd to Port Melbourne the crowds thinned out, and I was beginning to think I’d missed the turnoff to the finish so I dug out my map at one set of lights, only to discover that I was meant to turn at the next set. Arrived at “The Flower” just after 3pm, rescued the bags from the enormous mound of bags, and sat down with a couple of refreshing beers to wait for Jo and a lift home. She turned up half an hour later, showered, clean and changed, and we sat around for another half an hour chatting and drinking before piling the bags into her car, my bike onto the back seat and driving home.
