Problems with machine hanging with irq errors, and X not running. Reset results in fsck, lost files, long delays. Suspect multi-processor implementation of the kernels I’ve got.
Upgraded to 2.4.27 SMP kernel, direct install via apt-get. Added initrd=/initrd.img
to /etc/lilo.conf
.
Linux fafnir 2.4.27-2-686-smp #1 SMP Thu Jan 20 11:02:39 JST 2005 i686 GNU/Linux
Converted the ext2 filesystem to ext3, thus avoiding the painfully long fsck that was happening after every hang/reset.
tune2fs -j /dev/hda1
Re-generated /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XF86Config
, I think I had one from the IBM monitor and that was what was causing the lockups on the MAG. (30-70kHz horizontal, 50-120Hz vertical refresh rates)
Still seems to start in 8 bits per pixel mode, get around this with:
startx -- -depth 16
Eek! I seem to have enabled “dial on demand” and the PC now tries to connect as it boots up.
