Cycling 2017

An annual challenge, “ride every day,” and in 2017 I came the closest I’ve come to making it a reality. Some days I only made it around the block, or up to the local bakery, but every day of the year except two I got out on the bike and managed to clock up at least 1.5km. The two exceptions were two days spent in bed with the flu, at a holiday house in the Otways, while my bike languished outside on the roofrack of the car.

The other challenge is my annual goal of 5200km, one I’ve struggled to meet for the last few years.

This year for the first time I resoundingly beat my distance goal – with one last interesting ride on New Year’s Eve. The Audax Alpine Classic in January has me up above the required average and sets a good start, then two family mini-tours during the school holidays kept it up there. 6277.2km according to strava, perhaps I should bump the goal up a bit higher for 2018…

So here it is, the entire year with the exception of [2017-09-09 Sat] and [2017-09-10 Sun]. Not easy, and only possible when there are no non-cycling holidays in the year!

Vanity site? Technology experiment? Learning tool? Blog? Journal? Diary? Photo album? I could tell you, but then I’d have to kill you…

I experiment. I play. I write and I take pictures. Some of the site is organised around topics, other parts are organized by date, then there’s always the cross-references between them.

Its all been here a fairly long time. Like the papers on my desk, or the books on the bedside table, the pile just grew… and it all grew without much plan or structure. I try not to break URLs, so historical oddities abound.

Long ago it started as a learning experiment with a few static HTML pages, then I added a bit of server-side includes and some very ugly PHP. A hand-built journal/blog on top of that PHP, then a few experiments in moving to various static publishing systems. I’ve never wanted a database-based blogging engine, so over the years I’ve tried PHP, nanoblogger, emacs-muse, silkpage and docbook before settling on Emacs Org mode for writing and jekyll for publishing. But the itch remained… I never really liked jekyll and the ruby underneath always seemed so much black magic. So now the latest incarnation is Org mode and hugo.
