Drove out to the new start of the rail trail at Woollamai, not at “the recreation reserve” as described on a website, more “in a paddock to the side of the racecourse”, the only place to park seems to be along the side of the road, and unloaded the bikes.
Uphill gently to Anderson, the documented start, then downhill to Kilcunda and a fantastic cafe lunch. Unfortunately nothing much in the way of signage, just some very plain “X km” signs that indicate the distance from Wonthaggi, without saying that’s where the zero point is. At Kilcunda the road crossing of the Bass highway is a bit of a problem, I suspect that soon they’ll have to relocate the crossing to the near the shop and pub and put in pedestrian lights. Then cooler and damper the closer we got to Wonthaggi. A detour around the local wetlands park before heading in to town.
Hot chocolates at Wonthaggi, and a grumpy woman telling us off for riding (legally) on the footpath and to get back on the road with the local aggro. ute drivers.
From Wonthaggi back to Woolamai was the reverse of the first half, a tired and cold number one son gradually picking up speed the further we went and filling with confidence once over the highest point at Anderson for the last five km back to the car.
