After mistiming it yesterday, today I went out a little earlier, and tried to keep an eye on the ominous black wall of cloud approaching from the south-west. Something must have worked, the first spots of rain were landing as I turned off the bike path home into our street!
Around to Murrumbeena and south with the after school/start of commute traffic all the way down to South road. Alternating useless & semi-useful bike lane all the way, it comes, it goes, it has cars parked in it, it vanishes 50m before intersections, typical “world class” Melbourne bike infrastructure. Hot and humid, up over 30°C, but with little puffs of cold wind ahead of the approaching storm
Pass a suburb’s worth of bumper-to-bumper traffic queued up along South road then in to Karkarook park for some fresh air and gravel paths. Lots of birds & insects, high humidity, and one road-kill turtle that had made its way across Warrigal road but died on the way to the lake
Then off south around the bushland, enjoy the smells of gum trees and impending rain, straight north up through Oakleigh south and cut through the gravel road past the golf course. Up to the railway line and home
Five minutes after I’d come inside the sky went black, the thunder started and we had 7.5mm of rain in the next quarter of an hour!
…and how about that, Strava thinks I spent exactly one hour, zero minutes and zero seconds riding
