Fairly normal homewards commute, the stretch along Gardiner and Forster roads were on-road today rather than the mixed-blessing that is the off-road bike path. Today’s roadworks have the bike crossing under the freeway on the western side, complete with a traffic management person directing us between a large crane and semi-trailer
Been quite a few weeks since I’ve ridden on the road. There’s an on-road bike lane in Gardiner road parallel with the off-road bike path on the other side, and confusingly, signs along Forster road that say “Bicycles only” that apply to the old on-road bike lane that was removed during resurfacing months ago. I’d been cut off by passing traffic in Bayview road and couldn’t cross over to get up onto the bike path so I stayed on road, surprised myself at just how much quicker and stress free it was compared to the bike path where you’re forced to zig and zag for each crossing of a side road and always on edge and hyper aware of the drivers crossing from side streets and driveways, the majority of whom do not give way when they should. I probably should just give up on the bike path and use the road, and probably will, until the next time someone tries to drive over me at the anti-cyclist intersection with Ferntree Gully road
