An out-and-back trip along the Grand Ridge Rail Trail from Boolarra to Mirboo North and return. I’d been ambivalent about the direction to ride, Jo more sensibly had checked the gradients and pointed out that it climbs all the way to Mirboo North, so the return would be much easier this way
Very different countryside to the Gippsland Plains Rail Trail of the past two days, through the forest and often in cuttings or embankments, a pleasant change from the very flat and straight sections alongside farmland, and with the wild heath all flowering in various shades from white to deep pink-purples
Constant noise, and a few wheel tracks, of the local trail bike riders. Despite the signs forbidding them there’s nothing to stop them and we met a couple riding towards us then passing, pelting me with gravel off the tyres
A pause at Darlimurla to read the signs, examine the old huts, and divert off into the forest to see “the big tree”. At least its only about 50m off the trail, one large remnant gum in the forest now regrown
Enjoyable lunch at the bakery in Mirboo North and a little ride around the park to find the very end of the trail, then back the way we’d come, slightly faster this time as it was predominantly downhill
