A very warm afternoon ride, as I rode along Gardiners road and Forster road between Monash Uni and going under the freeway I watched as the temperature display crept slowly upwards towards 30℃. It eventually reached 29.8℃ before I got to the cooler air, then slowly moved back down to around 25℃ once I turned off onto the bike path along the creek. A perfect example of urban heat islands and the effect of large expanses of concrete and tar
Choking solvent smells in the tunnel under the freeway as four teens were busy graffiti-ing over the top of the last ten layers of graffiti, then back out to fresh air and bird song towards Huntingdale wetlands… where at last it seems that the angry butcherbird has stopped swooping me every time I pass through here
On past my normal turn off and continue along the trail to East Malvern station, then up along the paths through the Urban forest and Boyd park and stop in for a beer at the local. Only the one, then off homewards and an angry dog owner screaming abuse at me for, um, an emergency stop and not running over his illegally off-leash dog as it tried to run headlong into my front wheel. According to his shouting, “you’re meant to give way to pedestrians” also applies to dogs, his dog in particular, and he didn’t take kindly to my reply of, “No its a dog, I do give way to pedestrians”
