A very warm day, and a morning meander out and around. Down to Huntingdale on the road alongside the rail line, then turn south through the gravel cut-through track and make my way to Karkarook lake. A gentle lap of the lake with many other people all doing the same; on foot, on bikes, with kids, with dogs, then a complete lap around the gravel path riding track and back up to cross the Dingely bypass and get onto the bike path alongside it.
Follow the bike path along as far as Westall road, an itchy tickly nose from the zingy blossoms of the wattle trees flowering alongside.
From Westall road head northish, thankful for the graffitied direction signs frustrated cyclists spray painted on the path at corners because the council and VicRoads refuse to put signs on the path. Dived off eastwards through what I think was Springvale and eventually met the rail line a block past the shops, back to the shops and a magnificent Vietnamese iced coffee – cà phê sữa đá – to fulfil my coffeeneuring requirements. Then back onto the Djerring trail to home, being forced to detour onto the roads due to path closures.
The railway works have decided to close the bike path level crossings for the day – there are no normal trains running, only infrequent test trains, and there are barricades and traffic management staff at the level crossings to stop you crossing. For some bizarre reason they’ve decided that rather than use the traffic management staff to allow traffic through when the trains aren’t there, they’ll have people there for the entire day to stop the crossing being used… on a sunny Sunday when the path is full of cyclists
