A family outing, we drove down to Apollo Bay and rode out to Marriners Falls picnic ground, but parked the car at Skenes Creek to stretch it out a little longer. Its the one problem with riding and being at Lorne, you’re pretty much stuck with the Great Ocean Road in either direction, or straight up the hills from the coast and inland, and all three directions tend to have a lot of traffic. Down around Apollo Bay its flatter and the ride inland to the falls is quiet – especially for the past few years as the walk to the waterfall has been closed off due to erosion
First stop was morning coffee in Apollo Bay and a chat with a guy bikepacking his was from Camperdown back to Melbourne, then inland and out of town through the farmland. It then rise gently into the forest, we spotted one koala up in the trees, then finally into the picnic ground and a stop for snacks and a stretch and walk around
Bizarrely, the picnic ground seemed overrun with large black slugs, so after poking a few of them and taking a few photos we hopped back on the bikes and rode back to Apollo Bay to have Scallop pies for lunch, then the last few kilometres back up to Skenes Creek, sadly not very enjoyable with loud fast near-passing traffic
