Earlier in the day we’d heard the unmistakable sound of a steam train whistle and quickly looked up Steamrail Vic’s timetable – no, not going past the house but they were running a shuttle from the city to Glen Huntly, so we hopped on the bikes for a sunny afternoon ride up there to try and catch sight of them. Arrived at the Caulfield junction around 30s too late, a loud whistle and an expanding cloud of steam the sign that we’d just missed it, so a check of the timetable and we decided to head down towards Glen Huntly. Not the best viewing along there as the rail lines vanish into the trench, although we did get a good view of a hawk or kite of some kind circling overhead. Back to Caufield and off along the side streets towards Malvern and Armidale and eventually caught up with the train as it came back out of the city
A fun hour out, even if it was surprisingly cold in the shadows
