Trying to fight off the slackness I took myself out for a decent longer ride this afternoon; out to the end of the Djerring trail, down alongside Dandenong creek and the Patterson river to the bay, back up the bay and home via Glen Huntly. The intention was to ride 60km, or as near as possible … for reasons
Bit of a southerly blowing made the gravel path down along the creek slower going than I expected, the creek was overflowing and lined with masses of flotsam and rubbish from yesterday’s torrential rain – the low level crossing flooded and forcing riders to detour up and around over a road bridge. Along the way I met and chatted with a woman and the three kids she was shepherding along (her grandkids?) on a ride down to Patterson, confirmed that they were on the right route and agreed it was a great ride.
Back around the bay cool and windy, a check of the maps near the end of Warrigal road showed that I’d be too short in my distance if I headed home up Charmian road but that a detour around the bay and up to Glen Huntly would do it. Onwards onwards, almost taken out headon by four or five motorbike-like hire e-bikes, riders side by side flying along, half of them staring at their phones or filming their mates – dear Baybikes.com.au I hope you’re up to date with your insurance, the way you let those muppets ride you’re going to need it!
Then a blast from the past, met a guy riding a 1980s-90s 10speed Apollo road bike, can’t tell what model, looked like something from my highschool years! Claimed he’d bought it second hand very cheaply due to noises & rust and got it going, quite the surprise!
Up north through the suburbs, finally home, just a bit over the 60km target and one pair or slightly wobbly legs to show for it. Probably should do this more often
