Out for a longish day, inland down the peninsula and over to Hastings, then cross back over to Mornington and up around the bay. Added constraint was that I tried to take a photo every 5km … turns out I got one, or near enough, for everything except the 80km mark!
Surprisingly, I managed to get a lot of the way down towards Hastings on offroad bike paths; the Djerring trail, Eastlink and Dandenong Creek trails, the Peninsula Link and Baxter trails. I think if I’d hunted around a bit more I might have been able to find one from Somerville to Hastings, but instead ended up on a nasty bit of road – dead straight, one lane in each direction, no shoulder and with high speed traffic – as expected there were far too many close passes, and one arm stuck out the window and passenger screaming something unintelligible
Morning tea in Baxter at the bakery, a bit of snack in Hastings, then back across the peninsula and past Devilbend reservoir along the dirt road. Lots of people out enjoying the weather at the picnic grounds and parks
Then it was rejoin the better known (to me) Port Phillip bayside stretch, Mornington to Frankston and on around the bay to Brighton and inland and home. I thought I’d avoid the busy centre of Mornington and took the road past the racecourse … discovering that there was a massive outdoor concert “LOOKOUT” with JET, Grinspoon, The Veronicas, Spiderbait, Jebediah, and Magic Dirt, so of course hundreds of people milling about everywhere!
Somehow managed to miss the turnoff inland at Mentone that I normally use so it was continue on to Hampton, zig-zag a bit and home through the suburbs. Tired, a bit sunburnt, legs will definitely know about it tomorrow
