Half the Warrnambool to Port Fairy rail trail – today we rode from Warrnambool out to Koroit and back, furthest we’d got previously was the start of Kelly’s swamp, and that was a few years ago with some young and slow children
Fascinating mix of terrain, riverside paths on parkland between houses and the Merri river to start, then riverside farmlands, a dirt road through coastal scrub, across farms, diverge from the rail alignment for a section alongside a road, then back on the rail route through farmland to Koroit. Plenty of bird life, not too much wind on the way out, it picked up a bit on the return but was mostly a cross-wind
Lunch options were slightly curtailed in Koroit being Good Friday, but the local cafe was open and although disguised as a fish-and-chip takeaway, has a variety of rolls and other foods
Next time we’ll do the other half, or the full length and add it to the list of rail-trails we’ve ridden
