Start at 4.30, sunset is about 5.10. no streetlights, no bike lights. Not much dusk either. Got up to the airport and down the side road to the BOM, the tip, the waterworks. Hmm eyeball the map, the distance, the sun, guess my average speed …. and go. Off towards St Barnabas and a lap around the airport boundary. Will I, won’t I make it … Downhills are good, despite the potholes, up hill steep so the speed just vanishes and it’s right down the gears to climb them. Endless waves from passing drivers. Back around the southern boundary, heading for home on enough time … Hey, here’s a chance to get higher on the segment down to Beefsteak House. Past our accommodation, over the drop, down and into the potholes and corner and oh crap oh crap. Bounce bounce bounce and recover, back on the road and down to the end. Phew. Back up to the house and I’m sixth. How on earth did the guy at number one average 35.8 around there?
