After a bit of a morning warmup meandering around Albury, through the Botanic Gardens and up and down the river, I sat myself down and had a pre-ride lunch on the banks of the Murray
Girding my loins, it was off to the north and on to Woomargama, doing my best to avoid having to ride on the Hume Highway, and succeeding remarkably well. The first 20km out of Albury were all on an off-road path which seems to be part of the Hume-Hovell Walking Track, then up near Table Top I finally had to rejoin roads and head straight north. Just as I thought I was going to have to join the Hume I realised that I would be riding on the old highway, a near empty two lane road, completely obscured in places by giant patches of burn-outs and exploded tyres, which lead to my only real concern of the day – the road was almost covered in torn up chunks of rubber and rusting wire radials
There was a brief section of Hume, with a big wide shoulder, then it was time to turn off to the north at Mullengandra for the road to Mountain Creek, then back to the highway and straight across for the last few kilometres to Woomargama. It added about 15km, but was far more enjoyable than being stuck out on the Hume
Then here I was, Woomargama pub, home for the night and time for a beer. Time to write up some notes, where I went, what I saw – there were lots of birds once I was out of town, including a surprising number of Sacred Kingishers
