A ride I’ve been wanting to retrace for a few years now, from seeing where Cam rides to school and talking with others, I’ve wondered how far was it that I rode to school; primary, high school, year 11-12 college? Can I still remember the routes I took?
I did them all as one ride, starting and stopping outside the house I grew up in; Cook Primary first, although it’s no longer a school, off to school on one street, back home on another, “lap 1”, 2.2km
Then it was off to Canberra High, again there were many options over the four years but I took the easiest remembered, straight down the bike path – I think it used to just be a dirt track through the bush, neither path nor this part of the ‘burb existed. Then around Jamison shops to the school … and marvel at all the four/five storey apartment blocks. I did laugh to see that the school bike racks are no more, the space converted to another car park, with bike parking now being in a metal garage that certainly wouldn’t have held all the bikes when I rode. Back “home” much the same way, although I got lost in dead-end townhouse roads and stopped for a phone call with my brother. Lap 2, 4.1km
Third and longest was Hawker College, year 11 and 12 and two suburbs away. Oddly, the ride there seemed the strangest with me having no memory of how some of it went, and being strangely confused at which parts had houses and which were around the edges of the suburbs. The final stretch through Hawker seemed far longer than I remember … anyway, I got there, I took my photo, then turned for home. Third lap, 9.7km, curiosity assuaged!
