Hahaha. RideWithGPS routes where other cyclists have been. Tumut has a MTB park. RideWithGPS will happily send gravel tourers up blue-flagged MTB single track! Made for an interesting first hour stuck in a maze of steep trails, slogging away on foot up … and down … tracks that I found unrideable, until eventually I came out the far side by the rifle range. I should have paid a lot more attention to checking that route before starting in! I should also have stopped and backed out and gone around rather than pushing endlessly on into the MTB park
Once out of Tumut it was along slow slog of a climb up to Batlow, insult to injury was stopping to pick up a smashed phone at the side of the road and slicing a finger on the broken screen
A morning tea stop in Batlow, then out of town and up into the hills and pines along quiet roads to Rosewood for lunch, an excellent lunch in the courtyard of the railtrail cafe. Out of Rosewood was using another third or so of the Rosewood-Tumbarumba Rail Trail, this section in much better condition than last week’s ride into Tumba, then a turnoff onto side roads to cut across country and head towards Walwa.
A magnificently empty and straight dirt road – Mundaroo Road – all to myself, then rejoin the Jingellic Road and make for the border, a few spots of rain late in the afternoon descending back down to river level. I missed closing time at the Jingellic store, so no snacks or drinks, cross the river and take the surprise bike path the remaining 5km to Walwa and a couple of refreshing beverages in the pub – home for the night
