Stunning ride along the river from Walwa to the Wymah ferry, then a miserable slog for forty kilometres in the rain to Albury
There’s a couple of routes possible from Walwa to Albury, south around the lake via Tallangatta, or River Roads north or south of the river in NSW and Victoria respectively. The least trafficked is the NSW River Road, so after retracing my route back to the river along the Walwa bike path it was a thoroughly enjoyable morning riding along a quiet dirt road, I think I’d gone 40km before I saw my first car
A ferry crossing is always fun, the Wymah Ferry across the river and a chat with the ferrymaster, then cautious looks to the sky for the rest of the way to Albury
High humidity, hundreds of small insects trying to get into my eyes and plastering themselves all over my arms, despite hunting in my bags I could not find the clear lenses for my glasses, and it was far too gloomy for the sunglasses lenses – I found them two days later, sitting on the foot of the bed at home, where I’d put them to pack them in my bag
Cold, wet, mentally taxing, and on the final unpleasant part of the ride I’d have happily put the bike into a car or trailer and got a lift, but other than a few casual waves in the rain nobody was offering. The large steaming bowl of pho when I eventually got to Albury a life saver!
Then it was dry out a bit, get changed, and pass the afternoon with coffee and cake until it was time for the train back to Melbourne, the slightly-over-done adventure complete
Some quick numbers afterwards; 8 days / 2 states, one territory / 901.1km / 10,600m asc. / 2 trains, 1 ferry / one 60th birthday party / 40°C and sunburn - 13°C & rain / one slightly injured foot
