There’s an odd bit of motorist behaviour that appears to have become more prevalent in the past decade or so. When pulling up in a queue of traffic, some drivers stop a car length behind the car in front, leaving huge gaps, and causing the queue to stretch further back – often blocking side roads or the bike path crossings. Even stranger, sometimes the driver at very front will leave a gap for an imaginary friend at the traffic lights or stop sign. Today I met a stunning example, a woman in a large blue SUV mercedes had stopped so far back from the traffic lights in the right turn lane that I thought her car had broken down, or that she was waiting to do a weird u-turn or pull back into the traffic. There was a three-car empty gap between her and the lights!
We’ll never know. The lights went green, I rode through the intersection and shortly afterwards she made it to the intersection, entered it, and followed me through
