The options for cycling out of Lorne are a bit restricted; you can either go north-east or south-west along the GOR, or one of two roads up the into the Otways and inland. There’s plenty of side options, but it can seem a bit constricting, so I was perusing the map and found a minor road on the way to Aireys Inlet that I suspected I’d never ridden. Sure enough, the all-knowing wandrer agrees, so off I went …
Lorne, North Lorne, out of town and around to Big Hill, an endless queue of traffic coming into town, stopped, bumper-to-bumper. Once around to the Memorial Arch a left turn onto Golf Links Road and up. No sign of any Golf Links here, just up into the forest with plenty of walking, plenty of deep ruts where the 4WDs have ripped the track to bits. Quite a break from the GOR and its endless traffic. A breather up at the ridge and turn right onto Moggs Creek Track, then mostly downhill back to the coast, again with a bit of walking and a surprise meeting with three large 4WDs coming roaring up the hill from Moggs Creek and taking up all the road. With a little polite manoeuvring we got around each other and I made it down the last of the gravel moguls to rejoin the GOR, once again clogged with bumper-to-bumper traffic crawling towards Aireys Inlet
An icecream, a rest, then back to Lorne staying entirely on the GOR, and getting increasingly frustrated at the very close passes that some impatient drivers choose to make
