An invitation for a ride up Mount Buffalo with a couple of friends, I couldn’t refuse, although for the first few kilometres out of Bright I was starting to wonder if I’d manage to stay with them to the start of the National Park, let alone up the mountain! All very civilised and friendly though, the five of us kept a comfortable pace all the way up to the chalet with me slipping off the back for the last kilometre or so and telling them to go on
A coffee at the chalet and a bit of a rest then off into the descent; three went ahead a bit faster, myself and one other at a pace that suited us, then regrouped back at the park gates for the ride back to Porepunkah and rehydration … err, a celebratory beer, then back to Bright and say farewell
A salad roll and a glance at the odometer and I felt like a bit more distance off by myself at my own pace, and maybe getting up into three figures, so I headed out towards Wandiligong (again)
Off around the back towards Nightingale Bros then up along Jagoes Creek Road … to see where it went. The road ended at a dirt road into the forest, the map seemed to indicate that I could follow it around and eventually rejoin Morses Creek Road near the orchard but I was not sure, there were also ominous signs warning of forestry activities, and it was a hot day. I was in the process of turning around when serendipitously, a guy on an MTB came along and after a couple of questions, let me know it did go through and was mostly rideable on the gravel bike – perhaps a bit steep and rocky in sections. Thanked him and off he rode, I followed more cautiously and was pleasantly surprised when he stopped at one point, gave me a few pointers on the route and went on his way
Sure enough, out it came on the far side of Nightingale Bros., so it was time for another icy cold slushy, then eventually back to Bright and a well earned beer at the brewery
